Harmke Westervelt
World-Class Equestrian and Extreme Sport Enthusiast
Harmke’s mantra is “Don't Bend to Fit the Mold.” Hers is an inspirational story about following your own path.
In her early years she was a shy, awkward child who didn’t succeed at school, had few friends, and was uncomfortable in social situations.
As she grew up and ventured into the world, she found her niche with horses. She learned that she could “speak their language”, and developed into a world-class horse trainer and “horse whisperer”.
Her story is one of overcoming many adversities by remaining true to her authentic self.
Harmke has traveled the world extensively, learning about different cultures, particularly as related to horse and human marathons.
In 2010 she broke the world speed record in equine international endurance events, finishing with a sound and healthy horse, and has completed the Marathon des Sables, a grueling 250 km ultramarathon through the Saraha desert on her own two legs.
Harmke is living proof that with determination and tenacity the failures and disappointments are an inevitable part are part of life can be overcome lead to satisfying opportunities and alternatives that might not have been previously considered. She hopes that by sharing her experiences she may inspire others to expand their horizons.
